The flicker becomes visible on camera when:

  • The PWM frequency is too low (typically below 1000Hz)

Why Human Eyes Do Not See It

The human eye has a phenomenon called "persistence of vision" that blends rapid light pulses into what appears as continuous illumination. Most people cannot perceive flicker above 60–100Hz. However, cameras capture individual frames at specific rates (24fps, 30fps, 60fps, etc.), and each frame may catch the LED at different points in its on/off cycle, creating visible banding or strobing effects.

Use a dedicated flicker meter or photometer that measures:

  • Percent Flicker (should be <5% for broadcast)

"Flicker-Free" Does Not Mean Universal

Many manufacturers claim "flicker-free" but only guarantee it at full brightness or specific frequencies. Always request detailed specifications and test data.

PWM Frequency Alone Is Not Enough

A fixture might have 10000Hz PWM but poor driver electronics that introduce other forms of instability. Look for comprehensive testing certifications.

"Broadcast Quality" Is Not Regulated

This term has no industry standard definition. Verify actual specifications rather than relying on marketing language.
