Understanding LED Flicker: The Basics

LED flicker is a modulation in light output over time. It can occur at frequencies that are either visible to the human eye (typically below 100 Hz) or invisible but detectable by cameras and sensors.

Why LEDs Flicker (and Why It's Usually the Driver)

LEDs themselves do not inherently flicker. Unlike fluorescent tubes or metal halide lamps, LEDs are solid-state devices that respond almost instantly to electrical current. This is their strength — but also their vulnerability. Because LEDs react immediately to current changes, any fluctuation in power is directly translated into light variation.

The driver's job: An LED driver converts AC power from the mains into regulated DC current suitable for the LED. If the driver does this job poorly — or begins to fail — the LED will show it.

Primary Causes of LED Flicker

1. Output Ripple in Constant Current Drivers

Even at full power, most drivers produce some level of ripple due to incomplete filtering of the AC waveform. This ripple is the alternating current component that remains on the DC output after rectification.

  • Typical range: 1% to 10% modulation

  • Frequency: Often tied to 100 Hz or 120 Hz ripple (double the input frequency)

Why it matters: The key point causing flicker is fluctuations in the output current sourcing from LED drivers. Compared to traditional fluorescent light sources, LEDs instantaneously translate their operating current into light, without much smoothing effect. That means lower ripple = higher quality of light.

2. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Dimming

PWM is the most common dimming method for LEDs. Instead of reducing current smoothly, the driver rapidly switches the LEDs on and off, controlling brightness by changing the duty cycle.

Common PWM frequencies:

  • 300 Hz to 2 kHz: Can be problematic in camera-sensitive environments

  • More than 20 kHz: Generally safe for camera applications

The problem: At very low dimming levels (below 5% duty cycle), some drivers struggle to maintain stable output, causing flicker or even complete shutdown. This is particularly noticeable during fading effects or when transitioning between LED strings with different forward voltages.

3. Driver Degradation and Aging

As drivers age, components — especially electrolytic capacitors — degrade. Output filtering becomes less effective, and ripple can increase over time, resulting in intermittent or progressive flicker.

Signs of driver aging:

  • Flicker that gets worse over time

  • Buzzing or humming sounds from the driver

  • Overheating or burnt smell

  • Dimming issues that worsen gradually

4. Incompatible Dimmer Systems

Dimming LED lights requires matching a dimmable driver with the correct dimmer type. The most common compatibility issues involve TRIAC dimmers with LED drivers designed for 0–10V or DALI control.

Common dimming issues:

  • Flickering or strobing at low dimming levels

  • Lights turning on and off randomly

  • Buzzing from the driver or dimmer

5. Poor Power Quality

Driver performance depends on input power stability. Common causes of power-related flicker include:

  • Generator power (often unstable)

  • Voltage fluctuations

  • Poor grounding

  • Insufficient load on the dimmer channel

6. Signal Timing and Compatibility Issues

For addressable LED systems (WS2812, WS2814, etc.), flicker can sometimes be traced back to timing incompatibility between the controller and the LEDs. Different LED types have different timing requirements for "0" and "1" pulses. If the controller's timing doesn't match the LED's specifications, flicker can occur.

Practical insight: Different LED types care about these things:

  • Pulse length for a "0" must be within certain limits

  • "1" pulses have a minimum pulse width

  • The total period must not be too fast
